Is test and tag a legal requirement in Victoria?

Victorian employers have a duty under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 to provide a safe workplace, including safe electrical equipment. Test and tag to AS/NZS 3760 is the common way businesses show they are meeting that duty. Requirements vary by industry, so check with WorkSafe Victoria or your safety adviser for your situation.

Do the same standards apply across Australia?

Workplace safety laws are set by each state. In Victoria, employers must provide a safe workplace under the OHS Act 2004, and these standards are the usual way to show electrical and safety equipment is being maintained.

AS/NZS 3760 — In-service safety inspection and testing

The standard most workplaces follow for test and tag of portable electrical equipment, RCD testing and record keeping.

AS/NZS 2293 — Emergency and exit lighting

Sets out routine inspection and six-monthly discharge testing for emergency and exit lights, with a log book kept on site.

AS 1851 — Routine servicing of fire protection

Covers the regular inspection of fire extinguishers, fire blankets and other fire protection equipment.

AS/NZS 3551 — Medical electrical equipment

Used by healthcare sites for biomedical equipment testing and management programs.
