How often does Dandenong manufacturing equipment need testing?

Electrical equipment testing at a Dandenong manufacturing site

Dandenong and Dandenong South hold one of Victoria's largest concentrations of manufacturing, fabrication and logistics operations. Equipment on these sites is used hard, moved often and exposed to dust, heat, vibration and moisture — all of which shorten the interval between tests under AS/NZS 3760.

This guide sets out how testing frequency is decided for a Dandenong plant, which items usually sit in each category, and how a testing program is scheduled so production keeps running.

Frequency is set by environment, not by equipment age

The standard groups equipment by how demanding its operating environment is. A drill used on a fabrication line and an identical drill kept in a maintenance store are treated differently, because one is far more likely to be damaged.

For a typical Dandenong manufacturing site this generally means: production floor and workshop equipment every 3 to 6 months, warehouse and logistics equipment every 6 to 12 months, and office and amenity equipment every 12 months. Hire and contractor equipment is checked on arrival, and items returned from repair are retested before going back into service.

What a manufacturing program usually covers

  • Production line tooling, hand-held tools, welders and battery chargers
  • Leads, portable RCDs, power boards and transformers on the floor
  • Forklift and MHE chargers, and workshop bench equipment
  • Switchboard RCDs, push-button tested and trip-time tested on their own cycles
  • Emergency and exit lighting across production, warehouse and egress routes
  • Fire extinguishers, hose reels and first aid kits during the same attendance

Scheduling around shifts and production

Shutting a line for testing is rarely an option. Testing is normally staged line by line or area by area, timed to changeovers, maintenance windows or planned stoppages, and split across visits where a site is large.

Early starts, afternoon and night shift attendance are all workable. For multi-shift plants we usually agree a standing schedule so each area is tested at the same point in its cycle every year.

Records that satisfy audits and insurers

  • A digital compliance report broken down by building, line or area
  • An asset register you can hand to an auditor, insurer or head office
  • A failed-item register recording anything quarantined or removed
  • Durable tags showing test date and next due date on every item
  • Reminders ahead of each due cycle so intervals never lapse

Keeping cost predictable across a large site

Item counts, the number of services combined and how many visits a year a site needs are what drive cost. Combining test and tag with RCD testing, exit light testing and fire equipment servicing in one attendance is consistently cheaper than separate bookings.
